Wisdom teeth are frequently removed due to pain, infection, misalignment or an impacted tooth.

An impacted tooth can cause a lot of issues since it cannot be brushed correctly.

The Procedure

The first step in having a wisdom tooth extracted is the application of an anaesthetic. Next, the surgeon will make an incision into the gum exposing the tooth and bone. Then any bone that is blocking the tooth will be removed.

The tooth will then be removed, either in one piece or it might have to be broken up into pieces depending on its location. Once the wisdom tooth is removed the area is cleaned and the wound is stitched.  Gauze will be placed over the site to stop any bleeding.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Aftercare

Usually, wisdom teeth removal pain is easily managed with a prescription or with an over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen. If you continue to have persistent pain after the surgery you could possibly be suffering from a dry socket.

A dry socket forms when the blood clot that protects the nerves and bone becomes dislodged or dissolves. This leaves the area exposed to air, food, beverages and other elements.

The dry socket can cause severe wisdom teeth pain that can last for several days.
